Market Comment
Strong performances on international stock exchanges didn't inspire players on Ukraine’s markets yesterday (July 8). After a solid opening, the UX index declined and hovered around the flat line to close 0.14% down on a moderate total trading volume of UAH 72 mln. The weak performance was weighed down by metals and mining stocks (ALMK -0.52%, AZST -1.21%, ENMZ -0.70%, YASK -0.85%).

Politics: Controversial legal reform law passes in Ukraine’s Parliament
Event: The hotly contested law "On the Judicial System and Status of Judges" passed in Ukraine’s Parliament late Wednesday, Interfax reported yesterday (July 8). The new law contains more than 1700 amendments to the current law.

Politics: Referendum may result in early elections for Ukraine
Event: According to a statement made by Vice Speaker of Parliament Mykola Tomenko, Ukraine’s Parliament is set to vote on a referendum to abolish constitutional amendments made in 2004, which transferred powers of the President to the Prime Minister, Intermedia Consulting reported yesterday (July 8). Tomenko added that if approved, the government would work according to the Constitution adopted June 28, 1996, and that the changes would come into affect October 31, 2010.

Machinery: Ukrzaliznytsia railcar procurement tenders coming soon
Ukrzaliznytsia (UZ) has clarified its plans to acquire new rolling stock, after initially declaring its intentions last week (see our Daily from June 30, 2010). Within the next few weeks, UZ’s subsidiary South-Western will announce a tender to acquire 21 passenger cars along with two electric locomotives. We consider KVBZ (passenger car producer) and LTPL (locomotive producer) the most likely winners of these two tenders.
